The Darbar Hall

No. 457 Burmah Road, Penang

A Straits Eclectic Masterpiece

A House with Many Lives

An old postcard of this house was found bearing the name Darbar Hall, Burmah Road, Penang. Its richly ornamental design typifies a fine example of the "Straits Eclectic" styled grand mansion, built in the early 20th century - a rare jewel of Penang's architectural heritage.

After the war, the La Salle Brothers of St. Xavier's Institution used the hall as a boarding school for an extensive period, shaping generations of students within its storied walls until 1977.
